Icons transmit the truths and traditions of the Christian faith. They serve as our spiritual guides, reminding us of
the Spirit ever present. Byzantine iconography is a living tradition of sacred art, passed on from one icon painter to the next through the ages. That tradition continues at St. Elizabeth Icon Studio, where we use modern technology to teach the ancient art of egg tempera icon painting.
Do you want to learn to paint icons?
Faye Drobnic speaks to a class about the three tasks of students of iconography:
- To study the history and theology of the icon
- To master the artistic skills of painting and design
- To nurture a contemplative prayer life
St Elizabeth Icon Studio offers a comprehensive program of online instruction in egg tempera icon painting that includes introductory paint mixing classes, fundamental beginning classes, and in-depth intermediate classes.

Tutorial packets help students to paint at home, using what they have learned in workshops taught by the Prosopon School of Iconology or its affiliates. The instructions are based upon the school’s methods and techniques, and it is assumed that those painting from packets are familiar with the school’s terminology. These packets were created and are taught by Faye Drobnic at St. Elizabeth Icon Studio, an affiliate of the Prosopon School.
